Mission:

The Department of English Language and Literature at Mu’tah University aspires to prepare competent students with crucially practical skills, content knowledge and research methods in  English Language, Literature, Linguistics, and Translation. The Department strives to provide its students with stimulating and dynamic opportunities to be well-equipped to compete in the job market, advance scholarly research in various directions, fulfill more specialized academic endeavors and pursuits, and serve the community.

Departmental Goals:

The Department of English Language and Literature strives to achieve the following objectives at the departmental level:

1.    Offer classes and programs that align department priorities with student and university needs.

2.    Maintain advising strategies to ensure that they are responsive to student needs and that they closely track student progress.

3.    Enable students to develop knowledge in English language, linguistics and literature

4.    Enable students to acquire language and translation skills needed in the job market.

5.    Develop students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

6.    Promote students’ learning skills though classroom work and extracurricular activities.

7.    Enable students to communicate information efficiently in spoken and written discourse.

8.    Help faculty enhance their research performance and contribute to national and international knowledge production.

9.    Urge faculty members to use technology-based teaching methods to improve the quality of the department's outcomes.

10.Offer a broad and balanced curriculum in the English language, linguistics and literature.

 

Students' Learning Outcomes:

1.    Pursue postgraduate degrees in a variety of fields that build on their knowledge of English studies.

2.    Develop high linguistic proficiency in the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

3.    Grasp the basic skills and premises of theories linguistics, literature and translation.

4.    Demonstrate critical thinking, especially in relation to analyzing, synthesizing, and producing the English language.

5.    Demonstrate an awareness of the basic linguistic, literary and cultural manifestations of the English language.

6.    Be able to carry out critical analyses of linguistic and literary texts and to place them in their historical, philosophical, cultural, social, and global context.

7.    Acquire a sound understanding of major schools of language  analysis and literary criticism.

8.    Developing the students transferable, practical, and professional skills  necessary for further study, and for success in their future careers.
